Her mother had been calling her for about ten minutes but there received no reply from Maria’s room. The door of the room was closed and there was a complete silence prevailed in the room. It seemed that no one was present in the room. At last, when few more minutes elapsed, Maria’s mother, Raheela, hastily entered the room and observed Maria lying faint on the floor. Her whole body, from head to toe, was drenched in sweat and she was in the state of complete unconsciousness, with her body lying lifeless on the ground.
When Raheela caught this sight, her behavior altered from shock to lugubriousness; her hands started trembling and her heartbeat got racing. Not knowing what to do, she called on her father with great screech, “Ahmad, please come fast”. Calling again in the tone of distraught, she continued, “Maria has got a bout”
Ahmad, still sitting in the living room, replied with astonishment,
“what has happened suddenly to her”
Raheela, screaming at her husband, replied, “Look, have a glimpse. Maria is unconscious, I don’t know for how long ago, she is not opening her eyes; sweat is peeping out of her whole body” she uttered these words with the tears rolling down her cheeks.
On listening the words of his wife, Ahmad ran and rushed into Maria’s room hurriedly.
“my daughter, Maria, what happened to you my dear daughter, why you are not responding to our voices” her father said, while patting to her cheeks gently with has right hand.
Meanwhile, Maria’s cousin whose age was about 30 or less, rushed into the room by hearing ululation from his uncle and aunt. “uncle, I think, Maria has got a severe heart attack. If patient gets unconscious, the situation becomes perilous and on the other hand, if patient wake and vomit, it allays the chances of threat to a larger extent. We would have to take M aria to hospital as soon as possible”
And with a longer pause, “otherwise we would be too late to…..”
On the way to hospital, her mother and father kept on massaging her hands continuously with the possibility she might get conscious but it didn’t work. Maria’s mother was constantly weeping looking to her face and feeling helpless in front of the circumstances.
After reaching the hospital, a male nurse, with the help of other two, transferred Maria to a stretcher and shifted her to emergency ward. But no one was permitted to come inside.
Female nurses performed her ECG, five electrodes were fixed on her chest; two on the right side and three on the left side of her chest and her both wrists and ankles were gripped by clips. After taking ECG, it was confirmed that she was really afflicted with heart attack.
As we call heart attack S the ‘myocardial infarction’, meaning death of the heart cells, her heart cells were almost dead, only few of them remained unaffected from attack. Since heart is the core of the body and life without it is impossible, it seemed that she was almost dead.
As the news was delivered to her parents, her mother collapsed to the ground because of shock, Ahmad lifted her up and consoled her, “Everything will be alright, we have a solemn faith in Allah Almighty. He can’t take away our child from us”. He wiped the tears from her wrinkled face and caressed her head; in spite of his inner gloom and dismay, storms were rising in his bosom. Would that he could sob in an uncontrolled manner.
Ny the way, Maria’s family and the nurses, all were astounded that how can a person with such little age get the victim of such a lethal disease, after all.
Maria’s age was only 19 years and she was now climbing to her 20’s. Her visage was exceptionally beautiful; she had big black eyes with thick and long eyelashes, her nose was very sharp and her lips were maroon-colored , lower lip slightly bigger than the upper with the chin bearing a dark black mole. Her hair were thick and shiny; it reached her lower back. A round face with fair color and spotless-skin. She belonged to upper class who had new money; her father was a famous lawyer at supreme court and earned much in his career. They had a villa in the federal city, of about 1 acre. She was the only child to her parents and she was loved than anything else.
Anyway, happiness and miseries are the part of life. Some miseries are written in fate and behind some, there is a hand of man himself. One himself becomes the cause of the sorrows in his own life. But nobody knew that the misery that belonged to Maria was caused by fate or herself.
Maria was shifted to private room after ECG, where her treatment was going to be started. Dr. Umer, an illustrious cardiologist, entered the room in which Maria was kept, examined Maria’s critical condition and said addressing to her parents, “your daughter has got a serious heart attack; that is why, we would have to give her SK (streptokinase) injection”.
“this is the injection given to the patients struck with heart attack . it dissolves the clots present in the patient’s blood and regulates the blood flow again. After giving this injection, heart starts functioning”
Raheela looked at the doctor’s face with hopeful eyes and a little smile flushed her face.
“but it is sorry to say that it can be applied to a person only once in his lifetime. By giving the injection second time to the same person, it won’t work. And the most displeasing fact is that there is no guarantee that patient would survive. He or she can die too. Heart attack is really hazardous state in which patient figts the battle of life and demise.”
Mother heaved a sigh and fell on the floor with frenzy. Ahmad lifted her up and solaced her, “no harm would come to our daughter”
“I need my daughter”, cried Raheela.
Nurses gave Maria SK injection. Maria’s heartbeat was going very slow, bout ‘40’, which could be seen on heart monitor machine. “what is the normal heartbeat rate?” , asked her father to the nurse while glancing at her daughter who was still lying unconscious on the bed.
“the normal heartbeat of a healthy person is up to 60–100” , replied the nurse.
Father looked appalled after hearing this statement. “when would this injection be completed?” constantly presenting a questionnaire to the nurses and staffs.
“in 6 to 8 hours and so this time period is very critical to the patient. If her body responded to the injection, she would be saved, otherwise……we won’t be able to do anything”.
Half an hour passed, here parents were waiting, sitting on the benches outside the room aligned for patient’s guardians.
Suddenly a voice came out from the room, the voice belonged to a nurse working in the room.
“hurry up, call the doctor fast, patient’s situation is getting worse. Her heartbeat is getting slower suddenly”
Lines had started straightening on the heart monitor machine. “give her a shock treatment ” said doctor to the nurses.
“push her chest so that her heart may activate and one more thing, call one of her family member into the room”.
Mother entered. Nurses were heavily pressing her chest and every time, Maria was elevated from the bed, and collapsed to the bed after bounce. About 5 minutes, it continued and after shock treatment, her heartbeat repristinated and lines got wrinkled a bit.
Meanwhile, her friend, named Ayesha reached hospital and mother told her whole the tale. Moreover, her mother asked her only one question, “did Maria meet with Ali, her college friend?” Ayesha thought there was no use of lying so she nodded in confirmation.
“oh my god! ” mother shrieked in regret. “I many times forbade her to meet Ali; she knew too that he was not a good guy, he was a drunkard and drug addict”. But there was no use of regretting now.
Maria’s heartbeat again began to flee to slow. But this time doctor ordered not to give shocks because he knew Maria was taking his last breadths. In no time lines on the machine got straighter and consequently, a straight line was found to see on machine. Maria had kicked the bucket.
“we are very sorry” said he doctor after getting out of the room. “she is no more” said he, shaking his head.
Her mother seemed lifeless for a moment. No life reflected in her her body. Her head was cold and a wave of fear passed through his entire body. Her father began crying bitterly. His eyes had no hope. Ayesha also wept in melancholy.
“I had repeated that your daughter was consuming drugs since a long time. The narcotics had made her heart weak. Already she had clots in blood because of high consumption of drugs through food and as a result, your daughter left the world because of these poisons”
“would that I were able to restrain you from that guy who became the cause of all this disaster. I have lost you just because of my careless behavior, my dear child” cried her mother.
Her friend further told them that in spite of prohibition, she used to eat the foods which was provided by Ali to her; he mixed in them a smaller amount of drugs and she got ill day by day nut nobody came to knew about the entire story at all. Ali belonged to a secret dangerous gang which used to sell their drugs to students. He was an undercover gang member who sold drugs to Maria through bringing her different sort of foods items in the form of gifts.
The day when she got heart attack, was her friend’s birthday. Ali ordered a pizza for Maria and added unusual amount of cocaine in her part. When she returned home, she had a headache. She was feeling pain in her chest and suffocated. Blood supply was decreased to a greater limit due to blood clots in her vessels. She was afraid to share this issue with family because she was strictly ordered by her mother not to have contacts with Ali. She didn’t tell anyone and decided to handle the situation by herself. In this dilemma, she got a low blood pressure and fell unconscious on the floor.
“This is your daughter’s death certificate. Take and sign it. It is written in the certificate that institution is not responsible for the death of the patient”. Father took it with shivering hands and signed the paper with heavy heart.
“Now you can take the dead body with you.”
